Steel products at Watania Steel are manufactured according to ASTM A615 & SASO 2/1992 standards in the terms of chemical compositions and mechanical properties, in addition to bend and re-bend tests as shown in the table below:

Billet Production

  • Scrap Yard

    Scrap Yard

    Incoming scrap is analyzed and segregated depending on its chemical content.Scrap is then offloaded and then transferred to the Induction Furnace for melting.
  • Induction Furnace

    Induction Furnace

    Selected scrap is melted in the Induction Furnace. Slag is removed at regular intervals and a sample is taken 2-3 times during melting for Spectrometer Analysis. Once the required chemical content is achieved and Ferro alloy addition is carried out, the liquid metal is then tapped into a Ladle. more
  • Continuous Casting

    Continuous Casting

    Liquid metal from the Ladle is brought to the CCM for casting into the required size and length of billets. The sizes available at Watania Steel are: »100x100mm up to 130x130mm
  • Billet Yard

    Billet Yard

    After inspection, each cast will be coded by a unique cast number. Later, billets will be stored in the billet yard for future transfer to the rolling mill.

  • Re-heating process

    Re-heating process

    The billets are charged in a re-heating furnace to undergo a heating proces, where billets are heated up to a temperature range of 1200-1250 C
  • Rolling Process

    Rolling Process

    Once the billets reach the desired rolling temperature, they are brought out from the furnace and made to first pass through the Roughing Stand, where the process of gradual size reduction of billets begins.The size is further reduced in the Intermediate and Finishing Mills, till their desired size is obtained.

    Qst Process

    The Quenching and Self-Tempering (QST) process involves rapid quenching of hot bars at specific temperature with controlled pressure and travel ratio through water jacket after finishing stand as per the diameter of the bar from 10 to 32mm. This process is controlled completely by a computerized software program, which ensures accuracy on the final product by eliminating possible human errors to obtain the required mechanical properties. Such case-hardened bars give high-yield and ultimate tensile strength.

    During the quenching process, only the outer portion of the bar (case) gets quenched, while the inner part (core) remains hot. Due to its' soft-core, the bars will have higher elongation percentages and achieve the required bend and re-bend properties. QST bars are then passed on to the Cooling Bed which transfers the heat to the outer case thereby tempering it. Due to this self-tempering, the martensitic case becomes Tempered Martensite, with more strength and corrosion resistance properties.
Watania Steel operates a well-equipped laboratory as well as inspection facilities manned by qualified and experienced personnel.
